Is Bassong short-sighted?

He's driving me nuts this year. Virtually every time he gets the ball, he looks up, moves one or two paces forward, stops, and then (maybe because he can't see anyone ahead of him) either passes sideways or backwards. Just like Hughton - there's a hint of a promise of going forward, but then goes backward.
