What he actually said was Hughton's job was to keep us out of the bottom three. If we lose on Saturday and drop into the bottom three, he has an excuse to sack him. As you point out he didn't back him publicly, he was very careful with his words.

The end is nigh, unless things change fast, which going on the last 12 months they won't.
