My guess is that Villa found out that we are also after a new No.10 and so Wes would be further down the pecking order and might be available on the cheap.
It was reported that the Villa offer included a fee dependant upon how many appearances Wes would make for Villa. That deal could be bad for Wes. Villa would be less likely to select him beyond x number of matches.
I think this indicates that Villa would only see Wes as a very short-term solution. If Villa sign Wes then I think they will look to get rid of him within 18 months.
I don't think Villa would be offering Wes a long contract on high wages but rather a signing-on fee if they can get him on the cheap. The higher the fee we demand the less Villa are going to be willing to pay Wes.
I doubt that it is just a coincidence that Wes has been playing well in the last few weeks just as Villa have become interested.
