It probably means it took an hour for them to be fully eaten, not an hour to die

A pack of hounds isn't like a cat, which plays with the prey and keeps it alive. A pack wants to kill fast and then eat, so will have gone straight for the throat. They will have died very quickly.

If this is true (and always remember it could be demonising propaganda) then it is really barbaric.
