FAO anyone who's used Windows 8

I want to attach a PC to my tv system, running it through an AV amp. I was prepared to buy a new PC, but looking at PC world's webby, I see that everything comes with Windows 8 now.

Reading some reviews, I'm getting the impression that for what I have in mind Windows 8 will be horrible. It won't be used as a PC, it'll simply be a storage device and media player, and it won't be abywhere near me, instead being controlled via a remote keyboard.

Am I right in thinking I'd be better off having a PC built for me, and using Windows 7 or even XP as the OS? Or would I be better served by buying a (gasp) Mac?
