I think it's a great idea, but I'd modify it by bringing in a three card system

Meaning that the middle one - an orange card - would see a player sin binned for 10 minutes.

Probably my biggest bugbear in football is that denial of a clear goalscoring opportunity, often via a foul which is a split second late = red card. This ruins match after match after match: the punishment's just too excessive.

Also, on what planet should a bad foul be given the same punishment as a handball, ie. a yellow card? Again, that refs only have 2 cards to choose from is what leads them to bottle sending offs of players from big clubs. I think a three card system would sort that problem out as well.
