It's not the longest I've ever taken on a gag, though. My record is 34 years. Though it was a foreign language joke.
I'm going to tell it.
I was watching a TV play about a bunch of toffs in a cramming school, learning French. I was still in school at the time. One of the characters was asked to translate "She has ideas above her station", and said "elle a des idees au dessus de sa gare", and I laughed, because I translated that as "she has ideas above her railway station", which I found funny.
34 years later I found out that in French slang, what he'd said was "she has farted".
Observations: 1) the French are weird 2) i think the railway station gag was funnier
