When did "pressing" become such a cutting edge tactic

Admittedly i never made the heights of the professional game but I always considered putting your opponent under pressure when they have the ball and actually try
to tackle them to be a fairly basic component of football.

Anyway whether it is or is not cutting edge, its something we don;t do enough of, especially against the bigger teams.
