If we wait the three and a half years unitl Worthy's contract is up, even assuming (rather presumptiously) we won;t be relegated, we will have lost all our best players. Our average attendences will also be back down to about 16-17000 and we will have no money. Any new manager will have a sqaud of cloggers and disillusioned fans to deal with.
Sacking him now would cost a lot but we'd still be able to attract a relatively high profile manager, the fans would stay and support for a while at least, and the new manager may be able to keep the best players together and add quality to them if we seem to be moving in the right direction.
It makes complete sense, therefore, to sack him now - while the club is still in a better position than they were 5 years ago.
