Lager definitely not worth the hassle

you need to keep it at a very specific temperature for weeks on end.

Ale can be worth it if you plan to make a lot; but you need to get all the proper equipment (decent boiler, mash tun, several barrels, filters and preferably bottles). Definitely not worth doing from one of those cans or start up solutions, as they taste awful.

Also, to make the ale any good you really have to go to a local brewery to get some of their fresh yeast. Even then, it probably won't taste anywhere near as good as a decent pint from a proper brewery.
