I think we have been unlucky - it doesn't take a huge stretch of the imagination to see us 5 or 6 points better off from exactly the same standard of performances (the Hull penalty, Snoddy's penalty against Vills, the shots hitting the post/cleared off the line against Cardiff). In that case we'd be safely in mid-table and there wouldn't be any talk of crisis, despite the fact that the manager wouldn't have done anything differently than he has now (when he is being slagged off rather a lot).
But also there are clearly aspects of our attacking play (such as the inside-out wingers every week, even though that is a common league trait these days) that are pretty predictable and not generating the required returns. So a bit more experimentation and variation would seem to be in order.
