If your old PC doesn't have a HDMI connection (mine doesn't have one) then use the DVI connection to the TV (same lead as if connecting a PC to a monitor - and is what I do).
However, a DVI connection doesn't pass the audio to the TV. For the audio I have a lead from the headphone out socket on the computer to a PC audio input on the back of the TV (or you could plug it into a cinema surround sound thingy etc.). It works fine.
You might want to double the XBMC buffer setting (which is easy to do) to help ensure smooth streaming.
You will have an OMG moment when you add a few free plug-ins (icefilms) and get it working.
It is a really fantastic use of an old PC!
