but I can't believe the transfer over between the captains which eventually left Hanks in the orange ship could've been quite so stupid in real life?

In the film, the pirates had all the guns (but one) and the Americans just let him walk onto the orange ship without any issue. Surely if that was how they did it the pirates would have just turned straight around and got back onto the big ship?
