I don't think they really do back off any more

Everyone members the ref at Old Trafford backpedalling around the pitch to get away from Keane et al. These days, they stand their ground.

Problem is, there is just a culture of abusing refs - messageboards, stands, whatever. It is preyy miserable really - the way that human error is assumed to be corruption or collusion. Just not the refs' fault.
