An indirect free kick is also awarded to the opposing team if, in the opinion of the referee, a player:
?commits any other offence, not previously mentioned in Law 12, for which play is stopped to caution or send off a player
It then comes down to the ref's interpretation of unsporting conduct.
So whilst I believe the goal should have stood, it could also be interpreted that he did us a favour as, when he decided it couldn't stand, he should have booked Fer and awarded a free-kick.
