May & Baker oownstream ever since they spilt mercury in the river in the 1970's & thus it is now impossible to dredge the silt. They quickly got taken over by Bayer to avoid having to pay thousand/millions in compensation. Anglian water had then to pipe fresh water from costessey mill down to the Heigham waterworks.
What a stupid idea to allow a pharmaceutical company to build a factory 1 mile upriver from a waterworks.
The waterworks is in the city & may & baker in the county. That's how it was allowed in the days of separate city & county councils.
The main reason why Norwich was closed as a port & king st became derelict
