What has happened to the good old English centre back?

We conceivably could be quite decent going forward if we get to Brasil but I can't ever remember an England defensive unit so lacking a single world class player. Cole is world class but getting on a bit now but the rest are just really, really average and I'm struggling to think of anyone coming through to challenge them as well.
