I think you are confusing the purpose of the players with the purpose of the spectators

The purpose of the players is to compete, don't hey would carry on even if there was no-one watching (eg women's football)

The purpose of the spectators is more complex, especially with football since it involves elements of tribalism, family, social experience etc. But entertainment is a very large part of it and if the game isn't entertaining there are very few spectators (eg women's football again)
