Not knowing who'd replace him is no argument against getting rid of a manager..

Not any more, for the reasons you cite above.

Although it did get discussed yesterday a bit.

Plenty of other arguments against sacking him, each of various merit, and you can attach value to them as you see fit, but I don't think that one has validity any more.
