I seem to remember you thinking the stock Android email app on your Nexus 4 a piece of s**t, as did I. I have finally found the solution. Hurrah.

MailDroid. There's a free version, which displays an advert banner, and isn't quite fully featured, but it's plenty good enough. Much better than the stock app.

There's also a paid version, fully featured, with no adverts, which I got (bit steep, ?12, but I do use it a lot).
