Whoever at the CPS decided to take that case to court has questions to answer

I just cannot for the life of me see how there was any realistic prospect of a conviction where there appears to have been no evidence (physical, forensic or 3rd party) whatsoever to back up the girl's claims. Even if he did do it, they were never going to be able to prove it so nobody wins out of taking it to court.

As a consequence of bringing the case his name has (almost certainly unfairly) been dragged through the mud (although I suppose you could argue mud might have stuck more if he'd been accused but never prosecuted and cleared) and tarnished and he must have been through absolute hell. The girl will now be vilified throughout the country (almost certainly fairly but there's an outside chance not) and you have to fear for her wellbeing/mental state.

All very, very sad, a complete waste of money and very avoidable in my opinion.
