I definitely feel slightly uneasy in the centre around the Plaza de Armas. You definitely have to be alert, but most crime is limited to pickpocketing or overcharging in taxis, or possibly the odd mugging on a dark street at night - which can all happen anywhere but are less frequent the smaller the place.
She'll probably be in Miraflores or San Isidro in Lima, which are both fairly safe. Not really worth worryng too much about crime in smaller towns or cities except for obvious areas like bus stations etc.
Things have improved a lot in peru in teh last 10 years or so. The police are very good and helpful to tourists and they even have a specific tourist police force.
In summary, it's not really worth spoiling a trip by worrying about crime. She won't get murdered or kidnapped, but she might have her purse swiped or something if she's not paying attention. No worse than London
