I've been one of the people that has criticised Rob Butler. It's possible he's improved. I don't know because I can't listen to his shows. I was so put off by the ones I heard. This may be unfair, perhaps he needed longer to settle into his style. I respect what Dr D says so I'm sure he's a nice chap but it's too late for me.
My problem with him was he claimed to talk for us fans ('We like teams who...') but he would say things I would cringe over, that didn't represent my thoughts at all like calling Man City a 'tin pot' club because they had rich foreign owners. Each week he would make judgements about if other teams were tinpot or not. It came across so arrogantly to me.
I think my issue was if he wanted to say it, as his point of view, as a fan, then no problem. Everyone's entitled to their own opinions. But don't make out it's my opinion (not all 'fans' think the same and I didn't like being lumped in with his views!) And if he's saying these comments in the role of a presenter not a fan - as he has expressed, then he is exactly the kind of presenter I can't listen to! I'm probably old fashioned here but I can't bear presenters who air their views so strongly that they make it difficult for others to disagree. I want presenters to facilitate debate. Definitely have a point of view, but don't dominate. Neil had it down to a tee!
Someone mentioned how lucky we are to have two local radio shows dedicated to Norwich city. Well I feel excluded from them (having previously listened to every show, religiously, from the very first one). They are two blokes doing banter - not especially witty. A large part of the ones i heard was made up of them joking about each other not the football. (Has that changed now?) I think if it was just one dose of RB I could cope but he does The Scrimmage, Canary call and lots of the Saturday pre match build up! (AND post match stuff on a Monday!)
I listen to the Pink un podcast which I think is very well done - knowledgeable panel and always one fan to give their views - but it's a very straight review of the match, not all the quirky bits.
I really miss the old scrimmage and want it back!
It's could be my longest ever post on here. You can see it's touched a nerve. I'm clearly not dealing as well with it as I'd hoped!
