Massive caveat - you're a nice chap, so I'm not directing this at you, just offering a different perspective. This is more general though:
I'd rather someone was advised/trained whatever on etiquette than have some of the s**tty service that I've experienced recently (local, Seat main dealer being the worst)
When I worked in a supermarket, I was often extra friendly to people who were (or at least who I perceived as rude. It just seemed to wind them up and it's the perfect way to combat people's rudeness.
