Lost my dad to alzheimers some 5yrs ago now.... although he was from kent and a gillingham fan, he followed norwich since moving to norwich to help form anglia tv in the 1950's.... he was a friend of david frost and they used to sing on t he ball city together on the train to london and also at parties!
It was dad who took me to carra and got me into city.... early memories includ lots of boxing day matches v ipswich, and being in the anglia exec box when norqich played liverpooll and fash scored 'that' goal.
In 85 wr arranged a weekend in london for the milk cup final for my mum and me, staying in the bayswater hotel, same hotel as the team!!! Was amazing!!
Of course by my teens I was going to matches with my mates....my dad came with me on my first club cabbage trip to everton (1-1 with dennis van wyk making his debut!) Just to suss out the arrangments/security etc etc.... duncan forbes was a friend of my dad and promised to watch me for all future trips to make sure I got into no mischief!!
In my dads older years he stopped going, though whilst I was in the falklands in 93 he que'd for 7 hrs to get me an inter milan ticket as a welcome home present. He got one ticket, gave it to me. That ticket is framed and still on the wall!
Before he was really sick, I paid for and treated both my mum and dad to tickets to see city play gillingham, his original club. I plyed them both with whiskey/wine in the pub before hand whilst my dad connected with gills fans......it was clear his loyaltys were divided.....though he cheered city to 2-0 win....
That was his last match. Alzheimers took 8 yrs to kill him. I have no f**king idea how norwich were getting on in April 08 when he finally lost his battle. Some of you may remember me posting about it, some may also remember the obituary in the edp een I posted the link to. I was really cut up. My marriage had ended on the thursday my dad died the next day. I managed to race bqck to norwich and was with him when he died at the uni hospital in norwich.
In exactly 7 days I re-marry. I've never been happier. City are in the best shape Iin my lifetime. The good times are back, not just for city but for me personally. Tho next week I shall shed a tear or two wishing my dad, a gills fan, could be a part it.
