Yeah, it's just the sim that controls whether it's payg or contract.

Stick a payg sim in a phone that usually uses a contract sim and away you go. You still have the contract to pay for mind, unless you're at the end of it.

If it's a smart phone you would need a cellular data payg thing, or just do without mobile data - that's what Mrs B does with her HTC thing - it's a regualt mobile when out and about, but she uses web and email at home on the WiFi.
