presumably because if you used the actual position of the ball someone enetering could have a copy of the original photo and thus know where the real ball was.

I'm sure a (long) while ago When Saturday Comes had a feature on what they termed 'the world's hardest spot-the-ball competition' where week-after-week the judges opted to put the 'ball' in a ludicrous position out of all context with the photo itself, and hence no-one ever seemed to win...
