Have an old TomTom and it's pretty good, but did a bit of research recently. Garmin seems to edge it at the moment, but not a great difference apparently.

You can also get full functioning navigation apps for smartphones. With a really new phone then it's just a case of how much you want a standalone unit. I have the Garmin one, it's pretty good, but not quite as slick as a standalone.

I reckon as soon as google adds downloaded maps for Google Maps Directions then satnavs will start to pretty much die.
