Nicotine is a known toxin - it'll kill you on its own - and withdrawal from it is non trivial. It's quite possible that an "equivalent" e-ciggies habit would involve more nicotine than normal fags. There are also effects on blood pressure and a bunch of other things. It's not sucking on boiled sweets.
But there's not the arsenic, carbon monoxide, etc etc all to worry about on top. Your lungs clear, you don't stink, all of that.
I'm under no illusions that e-cigarettes are "safe" or "good" but I do think they're better than normal cigarettes. Such research as has been done show they're extremely effective at getting people to smoke less or stop smoking - though I'm aware of no research into their own bad effects. I can't but think that the withdrawal from stopping e-cigs is probably about the same as that from stopping normal ones.
Even if it's only the lung function and the smell, that's reason enough for me to want to do the switch though. If they do lay me off, or if work gets less complex and pressured, I know I can do the cold turkey thing, but for the just now I'd quite like to keep my job. All in all it's feeling like the right choice for me - but I'm sure it's not the right thing for everyone.
