Who was our most expensive signing prior to Wolfy?

I can only think of Earnie and Ashton breaking the bank respectively, but I'm guessing some of Lambert's/Hughton's early signings may have come close or exceeded, like Snodgrass or Howson/R Benno etc

Anyone know the answer?
