It's hard and probably off-putting if you're not already interested...

...but it's an astonishing feat. It's you against seemingly insurmountable odds and it actually teaches you to get better at it as you go along. Never played a game like it.

It has a multiplayer aspect in that it's connected to other people's games - say, you hear bells ringing in the distance...this means another player has just rang those bells - but the presence of another player in your game is entirely optional.
