That's why his own party doesn't like him very much.

He was up against an unelectable opponent in Gordon Brown and the country was dog-tired of that administration. Yet Cameron couldn't even win.

I personally think this analysis is unfair, but it's a very common view. My own view is that arguably Thatcher rendered the Tories unelectable - they've never won cleanly since she left office (Major doesn't count - I actually think he was better than most do, but his party was by then ungovernable and to an extent still is).
