Can you help me out please?

I've never owned an apple product but my mother in law has given me her old iphone 3gs which I have decided to use as its better then my current french phone

I put my sim in and it works a treat.

do I need to create any kind of apple account, to download apps? Anmd how the f**k do I do that? I only know about android,

also, do I need to connect it to my computer?

im lost! Please help!
