Perhaps the 4.5yr deal and mega wage was contingent on him agreeing to play for whoever of QPR or Anzhi happen to own his registration rights?

(There's too much of a coincidence around the timing and transfer fees for this to be anything other than something that the parties had in mind back when he transferred, eg some sort of 'we'll pay you your ?12.5m asking price but only if you agree to give us a refund if we get relegated' arrangement.)
