I've survived for a year in Poland with my Norwich & Peterborough account

They don't charge for overseas withdrawals and have pretty stable exchange rates - the only UK bank who offer that I believe. However, I've haven't had to make payments to individuals as my accommodation has been sorted for me, so it might be more difficult if she's paying monthly private rent. But if it's cash withdrawals and shopping then it's fine.
