You are right, as alarming as such pollution is there is really something about the buzz of Beijing that can't be compared to anywhere else. In fact, my whole attraction to China is centered around the less attractive aspects of it.

Beijing has changed a lot since then though. Have you been back since? You can still find you self in a Hutong, wiping the duck grease from your lips as you swig on some baijiu. However, a short walk away you can also find yourself among 4 lanes of traffic, staring up at the 'Hooters' sign as a Bentley turns the corner. Still love it though!
