If you found the first book a chore, which is understandable, i wouldnt recommend

dabbling further with the series of books, really. If anything, it gets slower, and the number of smaller, less prominent characters just keeps rising.

Thing is, and this is why I enjoy them so much, you never know when one of those less significant players is going to get thrust right into the core of one of the story arcs. And it can happen in the space of a couple of pages, when you've waded through 250 pages of really not very much to get there.
