Re-investment in squad v stadium capacity

Why do ppl keep banging on about increasing capacity ASAP? (Mainly pinkun msg board) Surely it is a no brainer that we would all rather see a strong, established city side that improves year on year and a board that each summer spends a good amount on the squad. I cannot see the point of rushing into adding more seats and then watching us struggle, followed by potential relegation - all for the sake of a shiney new stand.
