I quite often just laugh if people stray into unchartered waters about opinions

Or I turn to someone not involved in the convo and go something like "you listen to those comedy podcasts don't you?"

I don't really converse socially about serious stuff. The various 'grown ups' (nutters) on here have taught me how to be awesome in large groups

Doesn't matter what field you're in, what age you are, anyone can be a t**t when the heat rises. It's easier to just stay out of it and find the nearest lighter convo going round
