ie, to try to prop up the EU's olive oil industry upon which many of its nationals and certain bankrupt states depend.

The real question is not whether the EU should meddle in such low level affairs, but whether the EU should be intervening in the free market in that sort of way in order to prop up favoured industries (which depends in no small part on your political outlook).

It's the same principle as the CAP, really.
