It's very raw and uncomplicated. There's no direct route to it and barely signposted. But when you look at it from the bottom of the hill it's pretty imposing and you know is worth visiting.
Don't know what I was expecting, but it's basically a run down old hospital, with old gutted bare rooms. Part of it is a hostel now, and the remainder is open to the public (mainly English and Aussies).
What really makes it, is the guided tour - the woman has a ridiculous amount of knowledge. She's an academic and part of the team trying to restore it and create it as a tourist attraction. As they go through the restoration they keep finding more and more stuff out - the week before we got there they'd found another new escape tunnel under the chapel floor. Four months before that, she was telling us about the guy now in his 90s who worked a self built radio from the top of the tower. He not only went inside, but took them up to the top of the tower, moved back a wall panel and pulled out a another radio they built - it had never been seen before!
