we had a deal lined up for him last summer (don't know if loan, loan with option to buy or proper deal) and Defoe agreed in principle but changed his mind last minute.
To compensate Spurs gave us Harry Kane for no fee loan as we were short of a striker.

Personally I'd love to see us sign Defoe as the lad is a goalscorer regardless of wages, age etc. However he's pretty much #1 choice at a pretty much champions league team and would be a mentalist to sign for us.
