Dullness alert! Ask the Wrath re: Acer laptop USB pain

I've Googled it to death to no avail.

USB ports won't recognise anything other than the mouse.

Uninstalling the drivers then rebooting doesn't make any difference.

Any help welcome - failing that, I'll settle for amusing comments to take my mind off it.

On the plus side, at first I thought it was the external HD with 50,000+ iTunes tracks that was broken, but it's fine, just the USB ports don't want to know it.
