Less than a year probably. If Apple had gone streets ahead with the iPhone 5 they'd still be top of the heap, but they didn't.
And I don't agree on the diverse software companies bit either: google's strength is their online presence, in search, maps, gmail, etc. Focussing on bringing that closer to what the mobile handset does is where they've made the biggest gains in terms of making Android better to use than iOS. Nothing to do with relationships with other tech firms, outside of where they've bought firms to get their products - but Apple do that as well as Google.
And even then, it's so close in terms of overall quality that it really just comes down to preference. Some people will try bith an iPhone 5 and an Android 4.2 phone, and prefer the iPhone.
