Given that you say this:

I'm surprised that you are not appalled by the Daily Mail front page - as the obvious (and continuing) ploy is to paint benefit claimants as a breed apart, to plant the idea of them being 'shirkers' so that the government can push through their sweeping benefit reforms.

The current system has allowed a small minority of people to abuse it - the Mail will have you believe that it is a majority.
