imo, the order in which to buy your own gear:

1 - regs (buy new, dont risk anything off ebay unless they're second set/standby spares etc) - worth spending approx ?300 - theres a few brands to go for and a few to avoid!

2 - BCD - (the jacket) - decent one is approx ?250-350

3 - dive computer - you'll learn using either the PADI wheel or BSAC tables - great to understand the theory, but a dive computer does it all for you, and more - and gives you "live" dive info as it samples every 10 secs, so gives you a longer dive in reality, than if you were to dive using theoretical tables!
