I went travelling on my own back in the days when there were no tourists outside the resorts. Had a fairly s**t time to be fair, constantly being approached by people selling women, cigars, hotel rooms, meals and mojitos - the delightful jineteros. I even got busted by the cops in Santa Clara for smoking rollups, which they refused to believe was tobacco until it'd been checked by a lab in Habana.
Then, later on I had a Cuban gf for a long time and we went a few times. It was a totally different experience with her and I had brilliant times. When they don't think you're a tourist the whole attitude changes from everyone. Also had some very weird santar?a experiences which I won't go into because none of you would believe me.
As for driving experiences, driving along the beautiful south coast from Cienfuegos to Trinidad we had to stop and pull off the road due to billions of crabs all over the road. You can't drive over them as they puncture the tyres!
