he is going for the ball but...

he is very high and he is heading straight for the opponent so he must know his studs are going to slam into the opponent's leg even if he gets the ball. I don't think anyone has seriously suggested it was deliberate but it was VERY dangerous. A 3 game ban would seem quite sufficient.
