I think it's blinkered madness to say we're miles behind La Liga

Both Arsenal's and United's games were decided by extremely fine margins. They were also unfortunate to draw such strong teams so early in the competition. Citeh were undone by their low UEFA coefficient (which admittedly doesn't look like it will improve much). As with any cup competition, you need an element of luck to do well and this year English sides have had very little. I would also draw your attention to the financial precipice upon which Spanish football is teetering - even if La Liga is currently stronger, it's got very weak foundations.
