I haven't lived there or really visited it, so you might wish to disregard this.

The Germans I know all seem to think of Frankfurt as a faceless big city, the home of the German financial sector and a bit bland. It certainly doesn't have the reputation for history, character and identity that cities like Berlin, Munich, Cologne and Hamburg have. Having said that, it's a big old place and there's bound to be lots of culture / nightlife and that.
